Boulder Orchard House
This home in Boulder, Colorado is a major addition to, and remodeling of, a small house on a big, beautifully landscaped lot. The owner, a permaculture landscape designer, wanted a home that reflected his commitment to natural materials and systems. The addition more than doubled the size of the one story home with a basement to include a two-car garage, a work room, laundry room, great room, and a master bedroom suite on the upper floor. The walls are made of a 9" wide, double 2x4 stud system with cellulose insulation, and the green features of the house include passive solar design including shading, solar water heating, window sills made from beetle-kill wood from the owner's land in the mountains. It also has earthen floors, natural plaster walls, and passive cooling and ventilation. Stone removed from the existing structure was used on the addition to blend the old and new.
